About Biotechnology Sales....
Biotechnology is more of an enabling technology than an industrial
sector. It is the application of knowledge about living organisms
and their components, to industrial products and processes.
The UK has companies actively developing and exploiting biotechnology
across the whole breadth of it's application: from pharmaceuticals
and diagnostics, through speciality chemicals, food and agriculture,
to the environment. As such, bio-technology companies are frequently
involved in strategic alliances, or taken over by other industries
who are cash rich and seeking new/additional products.
In medicine, biotechnology is used at all stages:
- To prevent the need for medical treatment (e.g., gene therapy,
early intervention, vaccines);
- To understand disease processes;
- To discover and test new drugs and treatments;
- To detect and diagnose diseases, predispositions to them and
drug susceptibility;
- To manufacture therapeutic and diagnostic products;
- To treat specific conditions
The UK leads Europe in the industrial exploitation of biotechnology.
The UK has approximately 300 dedicated biotechnology companies and
a further 250-300 involved in broader bioscience related activities
(19,000 employees and 22,000 employed respectively). Many of them
are small enterprises with around 1-5 employees.
The UK’s bioscience GDP and employment are clustered in regions.
The most developed are: the North West, where there is a bio-medical
research base (Manchester-Liverpool); Cambridge, Oxford and the
rest of the South East; Scotland (particularly the Universities
of Dundee and Edinburgh); and the Eastern Region, which is strong
in agricultural research, e.g. John Innes Institute. There are also
good clusters in the North East and South West of England as well
as London, which attained two thirds of all bio-science research
funding.
The European market for goods and services dependent on biotechnology
is currently estimated at £30,000 million and is forecast
to exceed £100,000 million by the year 2005.
